Steps to Take After a Car Accident

When a car accident occurs out of nowhere, you’re often in a frenzy or too shocked to think clearly about what to do next. Proactively reading about what steps to take after a car accident will help equip you to know what to do if an accident ever happens.

Here are some of those steps:

  • If applicable, pull over onto the shoulder or the side of the road. Especially if you’re in a well-traveled area, get yourself and your vehicle out of harm’s way so no further damage comes to you or your vehicle.
  • Assess yourself and your passengers for injuries. If you’re seriously injured, don’t attempt to move. Stay still if possible and wait for emergency personnel to arrive. If you’re not seriously injured, dial 911.
  • Dial 911. Calling the police is always a good idea after an accident occurs, especially if someone or multiple people are injured. In some states, it’s actually a requirement by law to call the police, and the police make sure the accident gets a report filed.
  • Document the accident. If you’re not injured, be sure to take pictures of the accident and document the damage for insurance claims down the road. You’ll be glad you did!
