Specialized Transportation

How to Choose a Towing Company for Specialized Transportation

From time to time, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to haul a truck, a trailer, an RV, or another vehicle from point A to point B without being able to drive it there yourself. Or, you may have a large load that you need to move a few miles, and you don’t have the vehicle horsepower to move it yourself.

For these instances of specialized transportation, also known as specialized transport, hiring a towing company to help you haul your load is the best solution for you. So, how do you choose a towing company for specialized transportation?

Do they offer transportation between the two locations you need things transported between?

This may seem like a rather obvious thing to consider, but you’d be surprised how many individuals assume that a towing company will take things between two destinations without double-checking. Your first question when vetting towing companies for specialized transport should be if the requested transport is feasible. For example, our Tow Pro team offers good rates for specialized transport for the Middle Tennessee area. However, anything further may cost quite a bit or be out of our scope.

Do they have the specialized transportation equipment necessary for your cargo?

Depending on what you are looking to haul, you may need light, medium, or heavy-duty towing services. Light-duty towing has a GVWR weight limit between 0 to 16,000 pounds, medium-duty vehicles have a GVWR weight limit between 16,001 pounds to 26,000 pounds, and heavy-duty vehicles have a GVWR weight limit between 26,001 pounds to 33,000 pounds or over. If your cargo falls within the heavy-duty towing GVWR weight limit but the towing company only offers light and medium duty towing, you’ll need to look for another company for your specialized transport.

Do they have the permits to haul your cargo?

Any towing company that you hire to haul your cargo should have all the necessary permits and certifications to legally operate in the areas you’re transporting things between. They also should have drivers that are certified and trained in transporting all types of loads, especially if your load is a heavy-duty load.
