Warning Signs That Your Vehicle Could Break Down

Although it’s pretty universally known that smoke coming from underneath your vehicle’s hood is a warning sign that your vehicle could break down, there are a lot of other warning signs that aren’t as easily recognized. It’s in your best interest to know what these warning signs are to catch potential problems before you’re stranded.

Here are a few of the warning signs that your vehicle could break down to keep an eye out for:

  • Warning Lights. After you start your car, always check the dashboard for any warning lights that are on that usually aren’t! Warning lights are obvious signs that something is wrong with your car and should be checked out. Whether it’s the check engine light, the emergency brake light when your e-brake isn’t on, or some other warning light, pay attention to it. It’s trying to tell you that your vehicle needs to be examined and something needs to be done.
  • Oil Spots. If there are oil spots under your vehicle after it is parked or even while you are driving, that’s a sign that something is wrong. Vehicles aren’t supposed to leak oil! Be sure to have your vehicle inspected for leaks immediately.
  • Vibrating or Rattling While Driving. If something is loose, broken, or failing, you might experience more vibrating, shaking, and rattling than the normal hum of your vehicle while driving. When this happens, get it looked at right away!
  • Grinding When Slowing to a Stop. Grinding or squealing when slowing to a stop is the first sign that your brakes or brake pads are failing, which is no good. Make sure you have your vehicle serviced to fix the problem as soon as you can. If your vehicle won’t stop, you can’t drive it, and you definitely aren’t safe in it!

In addition to this handful of warning signs that your vehicle could break down, be sure to read up on other indicators that your vehicle needs service.
